3564 Elmwood Drive is an extremely rare Spanish Revival Duplex located in the Wood Streets Neighborhood Conservation Area. This property has been extremely well maintained over the years while original details have taken on the wonderful patina of time. The facade is classic Spanish Revival with the carved wood balcony adding a touch of California Monterey. On the inside, the ambered oak floors, wood frame windows, hand troweled plaster walls and colorful bathroom tile captivate your imagination and combine to create an incredibly relaxing environment. The dwelling on the east side of the property is a 2 bedroom, 1.25 bath while the dwelling on the west side is a 3 bedroom, 1.25 bath. The entry, living rooms, dining rooms and kitchen are very large and feel more like a standard Wood Streets home than your typically multiple-dwelling property! Each side also has a large breakfast room that can certainly work as a home office space or utility room. There are a handful of these properties located on the Elmwood Drive cul-de-sac but outside of these, there are none other in the city that I am aware of. This property is located just a mile and a half to Downtown Riverside, a few blocks from Riverside Community College, Riverside Community Hospital and the many more great amenities that have always made this neighborhood popular.
The Builder
George Julius Rasch and his wife Vera lived with their only child James in Glendale, CA. He was a plasterer by trade. Originally from Alabama they moved by 1941 to Arkansas where they died in 1988 and 1986 respectively. Their son went on to become an MD, marry and have several children who all still live in Arkansas. He moved and became a farmer. While in Riverside he constructed about a half a dozen properties all for investment purposes. This property is one of the finest examples of his work.
The Wood Streets, A Short History
In 1913 the Tequesquite Arroyo was filled along Magnolia avenue, making possible an easier route to the next phase of the city’s development. This neighborhood became The Wood Streets and has matured to become one of the city’s most prized neighborhoods. Walking these streets you feel a certain calm, park-like atmosphere. The mature trees create a dense canopy in some areas while in others simply provide a sense of age, their size being a marker of the years that have passed. Most homes are quaint and cozy though there are also examples of estate-like properties built for wealthy owners that wanted to escape the hustle of Downtown Riverside.
